Opposition MPs from the INDIA bloc began marching from Parliament towards the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters on Tuesday, demanding action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls.
The march was met with heavy security and multiple layers of barricades across central Delhi. The Opposition has linked its protest to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and questions surrounding Form 6.
Opposition Demands CEC’s Resignation
The Opposition has demanded the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that the electoral-roll revision process lacked transparency.
Leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and other INDIA bloc MPs were expected to participate in the march from Makar Dwar towards Nirvachan Sadan.
Samajwadi Party MP Dharmendra Yadav said protesters would do what was necessary to reach the Election Commission despite the barricades. His remarks came as security forces were deployed along the planned route.
Heavy Security Deployed
Delhi authorities deployed thousands of police and Central Armed Police Forces personnel across central Delhi.
Multiple barricades were installed around Vijay Chowk, Parliament Street and areas surrounding the Election Commission headquarters. Traffic restrictions were also introduced in several parts of New Delhi ahead of the demonstration.
The security arrangements were intended to prevent disruptions and maintain law and order as Opposition MPs moved towards the poll panel’s office.
Form 6 and SIR at the Centre of Dispute
The protest is linked to the Opposition’s objections to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and the additional declaration associated with Form 6.
The Supreme Court recently said it had not approved any modified version of Form 6 and indicated that it would examine records concerning whether changes were made and who authorised them. The Election Commission has maintained that its decisions relating to the SIR process were taken unanimously.
Political Confrontation Intensifies
The march is part of the Opposition’s broader “Save Democracy” campaign targeting the Election Commission over electoral-roll issues.
The BJP has rejected the Opposition’s allegations, while the Election Commission has defended its process. The latest protest adds to the growing political confrontation over voter-list revisions and the functioning of the poll panel.
