India Test captain Shubman Gill was ruled out of Day 1 of India’s three-day warm-up match against the Sri Lanka XI after suffering an impact injury to his right ring finger during a training session in Colombo. Team management decided not to risk their captain, with KL Rahul leading the side on the opening day as a precautionary measure.
The warm-up fixture is India’s final preparation before the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, making Gill’s fitness a key concern for the team.
How the Injury Happened
According to team officials, Gill sustained the injury during a practice session on the eve of the match. The blow affected his right ring finger, prompting the medical staff to advise rest for the opening day’s play.
The decision to keep Gill out was described as a precautionary measure, with no immediate indication that the injury is serious.
KL Rahul Takes Charge
With Gill unavailable, KL Rahul captained India on Day 1 of the warm-up match.
At the toss, the Sri Lanka XI elected to bat first at the Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground in Colombo, giving India’s bowlers valuable match practice ahead of the Test series.
Will Gill Be Available for the Test Series?
As of now, the BCCI has not indicated that Gill’s participation in the Test series is under threat. The team management is expected to monitor his recovery over the remaining days of the warm-up game before making a decision on his return.
The first Test against Sri Lanka is scheduled to begin on August 15 in Galle, giving Gill additional time to recover if the injury remains minor.
India’s Injury Concerns Continue
Gill’s injury adds to India’s fitness concerns ahead of the series.
Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has already been ruled out of the Sri Lanka Tests due to a knee injury, while batter Sai Sudharsan is also recovering from a toe injury and is expected to join the squad after receiving fitness clearance.
Importance of the Warm-Up Match
The three-day warm-up match provides India with an opportunity to:
- Give bowlers extended match practice.
- Help batters adjust to Sri Lankan conditions.
- Finalise the playing XI for the Test series.
- Assess the fitness of key players, including Shubman Gill.
What Happens Next?
India’s medical team will continue to assess Gill’s finger injury over the course of the warm-up match. If the swelling subsides and he regains full movement, he could return before the match ends or be fit in time for the opening Test.
For now, the team has opted for caution, prioritising the captain’s fitness ahead of the more important Test series against Sri Lanka.
