August 14, 2026: A major tunnel accident in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district has claimed the lives of seven workers after water and debris suddenly entered an under-construction tunnel at the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC) hydropower project near Mayapur in the Pipalkoti area. Rescue teams are continuing operations to locate and evacuate workers who remain trapped inside.
The incident occurred on Thursday evening when a large volume of water and debris entered the tunnel, trapping workers who were carrying out construction activities. According to the latest reports, 22 workers were inside the tunnel when the incident occurred. Fourteen workers were rescued and taken for medical treatment, while seven were confirmed dead. One worker remains unaccounted for, according to the latest updated reports.
