The United States has warned that Iranian airlines could be effectively shut out of international operations from September 23, as Washington expands sanctions pressure on Tehran.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said foreign airports, fuel suppliers and other companies could face consequences if they continue providing services to Iranian carriers.
No Fuel, Landing Services or Ticket Sales
Bessent said Iranian airlines landing outside Iran could be denied essential services, including aviation fuel, landing support and ticket sales.
He also warned that companies continuing to support the carriers could risk losing access to the US dollar financial system. The measures are designed to target not only Iranian airlines but also the international network that enables them to operate.
Sanctions Expand Beyond Iranian Carriers
The latest warning follows additional US sanctions imposed earlier this month on Iranian airlines and foreign companies accused of supporting Iran’s aviation sector.
Iranian carriers have already faced long-running restrictions affecting access to aircraft, spare parts and maintenance services. The new measures could further complicate their ability to maintain international routes.
Wider Pressure on Iran
The aviation restrictions are part of a broader US sanctions campaign targeting Iran’s energy, shipping, technology, financial and other strategic sectors.
The move also comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, with the dispute increasingly affecting international transport and commercial networks.
For Iranian airlines, the immediate challenge will be maintaining access to overseas airports and essential aviation services if foreign companies comply with the US threat.
