Delhi Police has intensified security checks at the capital’s borders and key entry points ahead of a planned protest at Jantar Mantar by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and INDIA bloc supporters. The demonstration centres on alleged irregularities in electoral rolls, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise and demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Why Are Border Checks Being Increased?
Police have strengthened checkpoints along the Delhi–Noida, Badarpur and Delhi–Haryana borders to monitor movement and prevent unauthorised gatherings. Security personnel are checking vehicles and deploying additional forces at strategic locations.
Authorities said the measures are intended to maintain public order, manage traffic and prevent disturbances. Police have not granted permission for the planned protest, citing concerns over law and order and previous demonstrations.
What Is the Protest About?
The protest is linked to controversy surrounding the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of voter lists. Critics allege that the exercise risks removing eligible voters and have demanded accountability from the Chief Election Commissioner.
The Election Commission maintains that voter-list revisions are intended to identify duplicate and ineligible entries. The BJP and the poll body have rejected allegations of politically motivated manipulation.
Extensive Security Deployment Across the Capital
Police have prepared a multi-layered security plan involving border checkpoints, barricades, surveillance cameras and reserve forces. Reports indicate that thousands of police and central security personnel have been mobilised, with neighbouring states also asked to remain alert. Restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita are in force in New Delhi.
Travel Disruptions Expected
The security measures have affected transport arrangements, with reports of metro restrictions, train cancellations and traffic diversions. Commuters have been advised to check official railway, metro and traffic updates before travelling through central Delhi or approaching the capital’s major entry points.
The situation highlights the growing dispute over electoral-roll revisions, with opposition groups demanding changes and election authorities defending the verification process.
