Indian outbound tourists are increasingly choosing scenic train journeys over flights for their European and Asian adventures, driving double-digit growth in rail pass bookings. Amid a weakening rupee and rising airfares, flexible passes like Eurail and Swiss Travel Pass offer cost predictability and multi-destination freedom, making rail travel a smart choice for cost-conscious explorers.

Europe Emerges as Rail Favourite

India ranks as the second-largest market for Swiss Travel Pass (behind the US) and fourth for Eurail, with Eurail sales showing strong uptake for backpackers and families. Swiss passes recorded over half a million global passengers in 2025, with Indians contributing double-digit growth over three years. These bundled products include free museum access, mountain railways, and local transport—perfect for itineraries blending Switzerland, France, and Italy.

Eurail’s child pass sales rose 8% YoY (2023-2025), signaling more family rail trips during school holidays and even autumn-winter seasons. Despite the euro crossing ₹100, travellers prioritize flexibility to tweak plans mid-journey.

Asia’s Rail Boom: Japan Leads

Japan welcomed 315,100 Indian visitors in 2025 (+35% YoY, 80% above 2019), with surging Japan Rail Pass demand. Beyond the classic Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka Golden Route, regional passes like Kyushu’s have jumped 2.8x since 2018, dispersing tourists to lesser-known areas.

December holiday spikes highlight seasonal appeal, supported by better air connectivity. Industry sources expect continued regional exploration as Indian arrivals grow.

Why Indians Love Rail Passes Now

Key drivers include:

  • Cost control: Fixed passes beat dynamic flight pricing amid currency headwinds.
  • Flexibility: Unlimited travel across 30+ countries or regions.
  • Experience: Iconic routes like Swiss Alps or Japan’s shinkansen.
  • Family appeal: Kid discounts and bundled attractions.

With 8.39 million Indians travelling abroad in Q3 2025 (+6.9% YoY), rail’s rise reflects maturing travel habits—blending value, adventure, and sustainability across Europe and Asia.
