Elon Musk revealed plans for SpaceX and Tesla to construct two advanced semiconductor factories, dubbed “Terafab,” at a major facility in Austin, Texas.

Factory Details

One fab will produce chips dedicated to Tesla vehicles and Optimus humanoid robots. The second targets AI data centers and satellites, engineered for space’s harsh conditions including higher temperatures.

Strategic Need

Musk emphasized that global chip production falls short of his companies’ demands, stating “We either build the Terafab or we don’t have the chips.” The project aims for one terawatt of annual computing capacity, dwarfing current US output.

Timeline and Context

No specific timeline was provided, consistent with Musk’s ambitious announcements that often face delays. He thanked suppliers like TSMC, Samsung, and Micron but highlighted the need for self-reliance amid surging AI and robotics requirements.
