US visa approvals fell by 11% overall in the first eight months of 2025 compared to 2024, with nearly 250,000 fewer visas issued, severely impacting India and China. Nationals from these countries saw a combined drop of 84,000 visas, driven by stricter policies under the Trump administration.

Affected Categories

Student (F-1) visas declined over 30%, from 344,000+ to 238,000 in January-August. Work visas, tourist visas, family preference visas (down 27%), and exchange visitor visas also plummeted, alongside employment-based green cards.

Reasons for Decline

Tougher immigration enforcement includes expanded background checks, social media screening, reduced consulate staffing, and paused interviews. This led to longer wait times and fewer slots, reshaping migration trends toward Europe and Asia.

Implications for Applicants

Indian F-1 approvals dropped 60-78% in summer 2025, with China down 33%. Professionals and students face uncertainty; experts advise exploring alternatives amid pending OPT restrictions.
