Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson exchanged special gifts inspired by the legacy of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore during Modi’s visit to Sweden, highlighting the deep cultural connection between India and Sweden.
The symbolic exchange took place during Prime Minister Modi’s Sweden visit as part of his ongoing five-nation diplomatic tour focused on strengthening strategic partnerships, trade, technology, and cultural cooperation with European countries.
According to reports, Kristersson presented Modi with replicas of handwritten epigrams written by Tagore during his historic visits to Sweden in 1921 and 1926. He also gifted a rare photograph from Tagore’s 1921 visit to Uppsala University. The artifacts were reportedly recovered from Swedish National Archives and are considered important pieces of shared cultural history between the two nations.
In return, Modi gifted Kristersson a collection of Tagore’s literary works along with a handcrafted Shantiniketan bag, symbolising Tagore’s philosophy of integrating art, literature, and everyday life.
The gesture gained special significance because 2026 marks 100 years since Tagore’s landmark visit to Sweden in 1926. Tagore’s relationship with Sweden dates back to 1913, when he became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.
During the visit, India and Sweden also agreed to elevate bilateral relations to a “Strategic Partnership,” with discussions covering trade, green transition, artificial intelligence, defence cooperation, semiconductors, climate action, and emerging technologies.
Prime Minister Modi stated that the relationship between India and Sweden is built on democratic values, innovation, sustainability, and people-to-people ties. Both leaders also discussed expanding collaboration in AI, clean technology, research, and industrial transformation.
The cultural tribute to Tagore was widely appreciated online, with many describing the exchange as a meaningful reminder of how literature and culture continue to strengthen diplomatic relations between nations.
