Searches Linked to CMRL-Exalogic Case Trigger Political Storm in Kerala
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday conducted raids at the residences of former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and multiple other locations across the state in connection with the Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited (CMRL) money laundering investigation.
Officials said the searches were carried out under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) at nearly 10 locations, including Vijayan’s residence in Thiruvananthapuram and premises linked to his family members and senior officials connected to the case.
The ED probe centres around allegations that CMRL made suspicious payments to Exalogic Solutions, an IT firm associated with Vijayan’s daughter, Veena Thaikkandiyil, without corresponding services being rendered. Investigators are examining alleged financial diversions and possible laundering of funds routed through multiple entities.
Political Tensions Escalate After Searches
The raids immediately triggered strong political reactions across Kerala, with CPI(M) leaders accusing the BJP-led Centre of targeting opposition leaders through central agencies. CPI(M) General Secretary M A Baby termed the action a “targeted attack” aimed at intimidating political opponents.
Large protests erupted outside Vijayan’s residence shortly after ED officials completed the searches. In Thiruvananthapuram, vehicles carrying ED personnel were allegedly attacked by protestors, leading to police intervention and multiple arrests.
The violence further intensified the already charged political atmosphere in the state, with CPI(M) workers staging demonstrations in Kerala and Delhi against the raids.
ED Action Follows Court Setback for CMRL
The searches came shortly after the Kerala High Court declined to extend interim protection sought by CMRL officials against ED proceedings in the ongoing investigation.
The ED had registered the case in 2024 after allegations surfaced regarding payments allegedly made by CMRL to Exalogic Solutions. The controversy has remained politically explosive in Kerala, especially after the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) earlier named Veena Thaikkandiyil in its findings.
While Pinarayi Vijayan has consistently denied wrongdoing and described the allegations as a political witch-hunt, opposition parties have repeatedly demanded a deeper investigation into the financial transactions.
Kerala Politics Faces Fresh Flashpoint
The raids have now pushed the CMRL controversy back to the centre of Kerala’s political discourse at a time when the state is witnessing growing confrontation between opposition parties and central investigative agencies.
For the BJP, the ED action reinforces its narrative around corruption and financial accountability. For the CPI(M), the raids are being projected as an attempt to politically weaken one of the country’s most prominent opposition figures.
