A devastating fire at a hotel-cum-guest house in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar has claimed the lives of at least 21 people, making it one of the deadliest fire tragedies in the national capital in recent years. Several others were injured as flames and thick smoke engulfed the multi-storey building on Wednesday morning.
The blaze reportedly broke out in a building housing a restaurant on the ground floor and accommodation facilities on the upper floors. As the fire spread rapidly, many occupants were trapped inside. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic, with some people forced to jump from upper floors to escape the flames while local residents rushed to assist rescue efforts. Mattresses were reportedly placed on the ground by nearby shopkeepers and residents to help those attempting desperate escapes.
Firefighters, police personnel, and emergency teams launched a large-scale rescue operation. More than 40 people were rescued and shifted to hospitals. Among the deceased were several foreign nationals who had reportedly come to Delhi for medical treatment.
Authorities have detained the hotel owner, and multiple agencies have begun investigations into possible violations of fire safety norms. Preliminary reports suggest the establishment may have been operating without mandatory fire clearances, prompting questions about regulatory oversight and enforcement. An FIR has been registered, and officials have indicated that those responsible will face strict action.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the families of the victims and announced financial assistance for those affected. The Delhi administration has also ordered broader inspections of similar establishments across the city to prevent future tragedies.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over fire safety compliance in densely populated urban areas. As investigations continue, the nation mourns the loss of innocent lives while demanding accountability and stronger enforcement of safety regulations.
