New AI Features Demand More Powerful Hardware
Apple’s latest artificial intelligence advancements unveiled at WWDC 2026 have sparked surprise among users after the company confirmed that some of its most advanced on-device AI capabilities will not run on the standard iPhone 17. The announcement highlights the growing hardware demands of next-generation AI features and signals a new phase in Apple’s AI strategy.
The company revealed that its newest on-device AI model, designed to power enhanced Siri experiences, expressive voice interactions and advanced dictation features, requires a minimum of 12GB of memory. As a result, only select premium devices will be able to process these AI functions directly on the device.
Premium Models Get Exclusive Access
According to Apple, the most powerful AI model will be available on the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air. On the iPad side, compatible devices must feature an M4 chip or newer and at least 12GB of unified memory. Mac users will require an M3-powered Mac or later with similar memory specifications.
The standard iPhone 17, despite being part of Apple’s newest smartphone lineup, does not meet the memory requirement and therefore cannot support these advanced on-device AI capabilities. Industry analysts note that this marks the first significant increase in Apple’s hardware requirements for AI processing since the introduction of Apple Intelligence.
Apple Intelligence Still Available on Many Devices
While the most advanced AI features remain exclusive to high-end hardware, Apple Intelligence will continue to be available across a broader range of devices, including the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 series and newer supported products. However, some functions may rely on cloud-based processing rather than running entirely on-device.
AI Becomes a Key Upgrade Driver
The move underscores Apple’s increasing focus on artificial intelligence as a major factor influencing device upgrades. Analysts estimate that hundreds of millions of existing iPhones lack the hardware needed for Apple’s latest AI experiences, potentially encouraging consumers to move toward premium models in the coming years.
As competition intensifies in the AI space, Apple appears determined to balance cutting-edge performance with privacy-focused on-device processing, even if that means limiting certain features to its most powerful devices.
