Doha: A major explosion and fire at a gas processing facility in Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City has left 54 people injured and 18 others missing, triggering a large-scale emergency response at one of the world’s most important energy hubs. Authorities said the blast occurred during the restart of operations at the Barzan gas facility, a key component of Qatar’s domestic gas supply network.
Videos circulating on social media showed a huge fireball and thick plumes of smoke rising from the facility, located about 80 kilometers north of Doha. Emergency teams were immediately deployed and later brought the fire under control. Qatar’s Interior Ministry described the incident as a “technical accident” and said there was no threat to public safety outside the industrial zone.
The Barzan facility processes approximately 1.4 billion cubic feet of gas per day and supplies natural gas to power generation plants, industries and desalination facilities across Qatar. It also produces condensate, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), ethane and sulphur for domestic and export markets.
The explosion occurred at a particularly sensitive time for Qatar’s energy sector. Ras Laffan is the country’s primary liquefied natural gas (LNG) hub and has already faced significant disruptions this year following missile attacks linked to the regional conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States. Earlier attacks damaged LNG infrastructure and reduced part of Qatar’s export capacity.
Officials have not yet disclosed the identities of the missing workers or the exact cause of the explosion. Search and rescue teams continue operations at the site while investigators examine what led to the incident during the facility’s restart process.
Energy analysts are closely watching developments because Qatar is one of the world’s largest exporters of liquefied natural gas. Any prolonged disruption at Ras Laffan could affect global energy markets, particularly as countries continue monitoring stability in the Strait of Hormuz and broader Middle East peace negotiations.
The explosion highlights the challenges facing the Gulf region’s energy infrastructure as operators work to restore production and export capacity amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. Further updates are expected as rescue efforts continue and authorities complete their investigation into the incident.
