Actor Reflects on 35-Year Journey in Bollywood
Mumbai: Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar has revealed that there was a time in his career when he felt frustrated with being typecast as an action hero, prompting him to reinvent himself and explore a wider range of roles. The actor said he realized after spending nearly a decade doing action films that audiences and filmmakers viewed him only through that lens, pushing him to seek greater creative challenges.
Speaking in an interview with PTI, Akshay reflected on his remarkable 35-year journey in the Hindi film industry and said longevity in cinema is a rare achievement. The actor credited his career’s survival to his willingness to evolve and adapt to changing audience expectations over the years.
Breaking Free from the Action Hero Image
Akshay, who rose to fame through the popular Khiladi franchise and a string of action blockbusters in the 1990s, admitted that he eventually grew dissatisfied with repeating similar roles. He said he realized the need to transform himself professionally and began actively pursuing projects outside the action genre.
That decision led him to successful films across comedy, romance, drama and socially relevant cinema. Movies such as Hera Pheri, Dhadkan, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and Pad Man helped him establish himself as one of Bollywood’s most versatile performers.
A Passion for Constant Work
The 58-year-old actor said he remains driven by his love for filmmaking and believes in working consistently, regardless of box-office outcomes. Akshay noted that he wants to continue contributing to the industry by doing multiple films each year, creating opportunities for thousands of people associated with film production.
He also described his career as a process of continuous rebuilding, comparing himself to a structure that must be dismantled and reconstructed to remain relevant. According to the actor, reinvention has been the key to sustaining his success for more than three decades.
Looking Ahead
Akshay is currently preparing for the release of Welcome to the Jungle, the latest installment in the popular Welcome franchise. The film reunites him with several well-known actors and marks another chapter in a career defined by adaptability, resilience and an enduring connection with audiences.
