Heavy showers disrupt normal life across Mumbai
Heavy rainfall lashed several parts of Mumbai on Thursday, disrupting daily life and affecting road traffic across the city. Commuters faced waterlogging in low-lying areas, slow-moving traffic and delays in public transport as monsoon showers intensified. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, forecasting more spells of rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next 24 hours.
Authorities advise residents to remain cautious
The IMD has warned that moderate to heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places, with the possibility of lightning and strong winds in parts of Mumbai and neighbouring districts. Civic authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and to stay away from waterlogged areas and weak structures. Emergency response teams have been placed on alert to address incidents such as tree falls, flooding and traffic disruptions.
Several roads witnessed slow traffic movement as rainwater accumulated in low-lying stretches. Municipal workers were deployed to clear storm-water drains and ensure smooth water flow to minimise flooding. Local authorities continued to monitor vulnerable locations while advising citizens to follow official weather updates and safety advisories.
Monsoon activity expected to remain active
According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon has strengthened over Maharashtra, bringing widespread rainfall across the state. The weather department has predicted that Mumbai and the Konkan region are likely to receive continued rainfall over the coming days as favourable monsoon conditions persist. Heavy showers are also expected in several districts of coastal Maharashtra.
Citizens urged to monitor weather updates
Officials have advised people living in flood-prone and low-lying areas to remain vigilant as rainfall intensity may increase intermittently. Fishermen have also been cautioned against venturing into the sea due to rough weather conditions along the Maharashtra coast.
