New Delhi: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has reviewed the progress, quality and maintenance of National Highway projects in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, directing officials to accelerate execution and ensure high construction standards across the strategically important regions.
The review covered 2,035 kilometres of National Highway projects in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, forming part of a broader assessment of highway development across multiple states. Gadkari evaluated project progress based on reports from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the National Highways Authority of India, the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, contractors, media reports and feedback received through social media.
Officials said the minister emphasized timely completion of ongoing projects while maintaining strict quality standards. He instructed agencies to closely monitor construction progress, address bottlenecks promptly and strengthen maintenance of completed highway stretches to improve safety and travel efficiency.
The review assumes significance as Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh are witnessing major investments in road infrastructure aimed at providing all-weather connectivity, improving tourism, boosting economic activity and enhancing strategic mobility. Several key projects, including tunnels and upgraded highways, are expected to significantly reduce travel time and improve year-round access to remote regions.
Among the landmark infrastructure initiatives is the Zoji La Tunnel, which recently achieved a major construction milestone. Once completed, the tunnel will provide uninterrupted road connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh throughout the year, replacing the seasonal route that is often closed due to heavy snowfall.
The Centre has identified road connectivity in the Himalayan region as a priority, with ongoing investments focused on improving logistics, strengthening border infrastructure and supporting socio-economic development in the two Union Territories. Officials said regular project reviews are intended to ensure that construction targets are achieved without compromising quality or safety.
