Washington, D.C.: U.S. President Donald Trump has officially proclaimed July 4, 2026, as the 250th anniversary of American Independence, calling on citizens to celebrate the nation’s history, freedoms and democratic ideals. The proclamation comes as the United States marks its Semiquincentennial, commemorating 250 years since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
Ahead of his keynote address at Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota, Trump also announced six presidential pardons as part of the anniversary observances. The White House said the pardons recognize individuals who have demonstrated rehabilitation or whose cases warranted executive clemency, though detailed information on each recipient was not immediately released.
Trump’s speech at Mount Rushmore is one of the centrepiece events of the nationwide celebrations. The event includes military tributes, patriotic performances and a fireworks display, with thousands of people expected to attend despite heat and wildfire-related concerns in parts of the region.
The Independence Day celebrations continue later in Washington, D.C., where Trump is scheduled to address a gathering on the National Mall before a large fireworks display. The anniversary is being marked through events organised by the White House’s Task Force 250, alongside broader commemorations taking place across the country.
The 250th anniversary has also generated political debate, with different organisations presenting varying visions of how the milestone should be commemorated. Nevertheless, the occasion remains one of the most significant national observances in U.S. history, celebrating two and a half centuries of independence.
