During his customary remarks before the session began, the Prime Minister referred to the average age of the team behind Skyroot Aerospace’s historic Vikram-1 mission and quipped that he was “not talking about a 56-year-old youngster,” an apparent reference to the Leader of the Opposition, who turned 56 this year.
Highlighting India’s achievements in science and technology, PM Modi congratulated the young engineers and scientists at Skyroot Aerospace after the successful launch of Vikram-1, India’s first privately developed rocket to reach orbit. He noted that the average age of the company’s team is just 28 years, describing the accomplishment as proof of the country’s growing innovation ecosystem and the capabilities of its youth.
The Prime Minister then added that he was “not talking about a 56-year-old youth,” drawing laughter and immediately triggering political reactions. Although he did not mention Rahul Gandhi by name, the remark was widely interpreted as a jab at the Congress leader, who has often been described by political opponents as a “youth leader” despite his age.
The exchange continues a long-running political rivalry between the BJP and the Congress. The comment also echoes previous political barbs involving the phrase “56-inch chest,” which Narendra Modi popularised during the 2014 general election campaign. Over the years, Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, have frequently used the same phrase to criticise the Prime Minister on issues related to national security and governance.
Apart from the political exchange, PM Modi called for a productive and constructive Monsoon Session, urging lawmakers from all parties to focus on meaningful debate and legislation that benefits the nation. He expressed hope that Parliament would function smoothly and contribute to the welfare and development of the country.
The Monsoon Session is expected to witness intense debates on several key national issues, with the Opposition preparing to raise matters including alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, the Ayodhya Ram Mandir donation controversy and other governance-related concerns.
