Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to travel to New Delhi in the first days of March for high-level talks with Indian leadership, according to comments from a senior Canadian official.
Ontario’s Minister of Economic Development, Victor Fedeli, said Carney’s visit from March 1–2 will focus on advancing negotiations toward a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with India. Federal and provincial representatives are expected to work with Indian counterparts to outline the structure and goals of a trade framework aimed at deepening economic collaboration between the two countries.
The initiative comes as Ottawa seeks to diversify its trade relationships beyond its longstanding dependence on the United States — particularly following tariff actions imposed by Washington that have strained bilateral commerce. Carney has made expanding Canada’s economic ties with Asia a central part of his foreign policy strategy.
Carney’s predecessor faced diplomatic friction with India after controversial accusations related to a political killing in 2023, which India denied. The upcoming visit signals an ongoing effort to reset and strengthen bilateral ties under the new Canadian leadership.
During his trip, Carney is expected to engage in discussions not only on trade but also on investment and technology cooperation. Fedeli, who is in India attending an AI-focused global summit, has been promoting Ontario as a destination for Indian investment, noting that trade between the province and India has surged significantly over recent years.
Earlier in 2025, Canada and India agreed on the need to revive stalled free trade talks, aiming to bolster bilateral economic activity and explore opportunities in sectors such as energy, technology, and critical minerals.
Carney’s visit is viewed as a key step in that direction, reinforcing both countries’ interest in forging stronger economic and strategic ties in a shifting global trade environment.
