IIT Madras, through its National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways and Coasts (NTCPWC), has developed the country’s first indigenous AI-powered Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) system, set for deployment at Paradip Port in Odisha.
Next-Gen Maritime Innovation
Named MARINA, this advanced 3D VTS integrates real-time vessel monitoring, traffic organization, navigational assistance, and incident management. The AI-driven digital assistant provides automated alerts for anomalies like oil spills, predictive movements, and reduced operator workload, housed in Paradip’s upcoming VTS signal station.
Prof K Murali highlighted the 3D module’s complete environmental awareness for superior risk assessment and decision support.
Paradip’s Ambitious Expansion
India’s top cargo handler (150 MMT, targeting 300 MMT) pursues 100% mechanization, green hydrogen hub status (₹1.5 lakh crore MoUs), and green port certification within five months via solar power and massive afforestation. Chairman PL Haranadh emphasized VTS criticality for future efficiency.
