India has begun construction on its first dedicated runway for drones at a new base in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, following lessons from Operation Sindoor against Pakistan. The 2,110-meter-long and 45-meter-wide runway will support remotely piloted aircraft, enhancing surveillance and strike capabilities.

Project Background

Operation Sindoor, launched in May 2025 after a terror attack in Pahalgam, saw India deploy SkyStriker drones to target Pakistani terror infrastructure, highlighting the need for advanced drone infrastructure. The Border Security Force responded by forming its first UAV squadron along the Pakistan border, destroying over 118 enemy posts. This Meerut facility marks a key step in India’s drone warfare modernization under the Make in India initiative.

Strategic Features

The runway at the base’s heart is designed for large-scale drone operations, including reconnaissance, loitering munitions, and attack UAVs. It builds on recent exercises like Drone Shakti and integrates counter-drone tech amid rising threats from Pakistan’s drone swarms. Officials emphasize rapid deployment to strengthen border security in Jammu, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.
