Iran’s Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali has reiterated that the country’s request to FIFA to relocate its 2026 FIFA World Cup matches from the United States to Mexico is still valid. He confirmed that Iran is yet to receive an official response from world football’s governing body regarding the proposal.

Security Concerns Drive Relocation Demand

The request stems from rising geopolitical tensions and concerns over the safety of Iranian players and officials. Donyamali stressed that adequate security guarantees are essential for participation, adding that uncertainty over such assurances in the United States has raised serious doubts within the Iranian camp.

Government to Take Final Call

While preparations for the tournament are ongoing, the minister clarified that the ultimate decision on Iran’s participation will rest with the government. He noted that the football federation and sports ministry are continuing to keep the national team ready, but broader political and security considerations will influence the final stance.

Criticism of US Statements

Donyamali also criticised statements made by former US President Donald Trump regarding the safety of the Iranian team, calling them “contradictory” and lacking consistency. He emphasised that such remarks further complicate the situation and heighten concerns over security arrangements.

FIFA Yet to Indicate Any Change

Despite Iran’s repeated request, FIFA has so far maintained its original tournament schedule, with matches set to be played across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Reports indicate that relocating fixtures at this stage would be logistically challenging and unprecedented.

Uncertainty Over Participation Continues

Iran are scheduled to play their group-stage matches in cities such as Los Angeles and Seattle, but participation remains uncertain without clear security guarantees. The situation adds a new layer of complexity to the 2026 World Cup, already set against a backdrop of geopolitical tensions and heightened security concerns.
