Kochi is set to become India’s first city with a modern light tram transport system, complementing its existing metro to enhance urban connectivity. Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has approved initial plans for this cost-effective solution targeting high-traffic corridors underserved by conventional metro lines.

Project Route and Design

The pilot 6.2-km route will link MG Road to Thevara via Shanmugham Road and High Court junction, easing congestion in commercial hubs. Each 25-meter, three-coach tram carries 240 passengers using electric-hybrid tech, fully charging in six minutes for 45 km range with low-floor access for all users.

Swiss firm HESS Green Mobility’s feasibility study guides development, leveraging their Brisbane expertise for flexible road, elevated, or underground operations.

Sustainable Urban Boost

This initiative reduces reliance on buses and private vehicles while integrating with Water Metro ferries for multimodal travel. Local manufacturing could lower costs amid Kerala’s budget constraints, potentially expanding to Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode. Kochi leads green mobility innovation nationwide.
