NCERT has withdrawn its entire Class 8 Social Science textbook “Exploring Society: India and Beyond, Vol II” and tendered an unconditional public apology for Chapter 4, “The Role of Judiciary in our Society,” ahead of a Supreme Court hearing in a suo motu case.

Supreme Court Slams “Deep-Rooted Conspiracy”

The chapter discussed judicial corruption, backlogs, judge shortages, and procedural delays—quoting ex-CJI BR Gavai—prompting SC’s February 2026 ban on distribution and digital copies, terming it a deliberate attack on institutional sanctity. Justices ordered seizure of 38,000 printed copies nationwide.

“Purely Unintentional” Error, Book Pulled

NCERT Director and members stated the “inappropriate textual material” was unintentional, emphasizing no intent to undermine constitutional bodies, with revisions planned for 2026-27 after stakeholder consultation. Circulation halted; two content creators disassociated per government orders deemed “too light” by SC.
