Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung declared China the true security threat to the region, directly rebuking remarks by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the Munich Security Conference.
Conference Remarks
Wang Yi warned on February 14 that certain nations are attempting to detach Taiwan from China, blaming Japan for escalating tensions and stressing adherence to the UN Charter. He framed Taiwan as integral to China’s postwar sovereignty, rejecting any challenges to this view.
Taiwan, absent from the event as senior officials were not invited, countered that China’s frequent military drills around the island—latest in December—violate UN principles against force or threats.
Sovereignty Dispute
Lin asserted Taiwan’s sovereignty has never belonged to the People’s Republic of China, citing history, reality, and international law; post-WWII handover was to the Republic of China, not Beijing’s regime. He accused China of hypocrisy in preaching peace while showing hegemonic intent.
This exchange underscores ongoing cross-strait friction amid China’s daily military patrols and Taiwan’s insistence on self-determination.
