US President Donald Trump has left open the possibility of renewed military strikes against Iran before the upcoming US midterm elections, while saying he expects the conflict to end soon.
Speaking to Fox News, Trump said the United States would “win” the war soon and linked an end to the conflict with a potential decline in global oil prices.
Trump Does Not Rule Out Pre-Midterm Strikes
Asked whether US military action could resume before the midterm elections, Trump declined to rule it out, saying it was “possible.”
His comments come after Washington rejected an Iranian proposal for a seven-day roadmap aimed at ending the conflict, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and restarting nuclear negotiations.
Trump has continued to identify preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon as a central US objective.
Iran Keeps Diplomacy Open
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran was prepared for renewed fighting but remained open to diplomacy.
Araghchi said the choice now rests with Trump, while Iran continues to maintain that negotiations could be pursued under conditions acceptable to Tehran.
Oil Prices and Strait of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz remains central to the conflict because disruptions there can affect international energy shipments.
Trump said an end to the war would lead to a significant reduction in oil prices. Meanwhile, continued uncertainty over the waterway and the possibility of renewed military action remain important factors for global energy markets.
For now, Trump’s comments indicate that military action before the midterms has not been ruled out, while diplomatic contacts between Washington and Tehran remain possible.
