Lionel Messi has officially brought his 21-year international career with Argentina to an end, signing off with a goal and two assists in a 3-0 friendly victory over Benin at the packed Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.
The 39-year-old made his 208th appearance for Argentina, extending his record as the country’s most-capped player. He also scored his 126th international goal in his final appearance for the national team.
Emotional Farewell at the Monumental
More than 85,000 fans gathered at the Monumental for Messi’s final Argentina appearance. A large “Gracias” No. 10 shirt was displayed in his hometown of Rosario before the match, while fans in Buenos Aires gave the captain an emotional reception.
Messi entered the field with his children before the national anthem, as Argentina’s World Cup-winning teammates and other former internationals joined the farewell celebrations.
Messi Creates One Final Masterclass
The match was goalless at half-time, but Argentina took control after the break.
Nicolás Otamendi opened the scoring after a Messi assist, before Nico Paz added the second, again set up by Messi. The Argentine captain then completed the 3-0 victory by converting a penalty late in the match.
The performance gave Messi a goal and two assists in his final international game.
A Remarkable Argentina Career
Messi leaves international football as Argentina’s record appearance-maker and leading scorer. His career with the national team included the 2022 FIFA World Cup, two Copa América titles and the 2022 Finalissima.
He made his senior Argentina debut in 2005 and went on to become the central figure in one of the country’s most successful periods in international football.
The End of an Era
After the final whistle, Messi embraced teammates and opponents as the Monumental celebrated his contribution to Argentine football.
His final international appearance ended with Argentina’s 3-0 victory, a goal for Messi and an emotional farewell in front of his home supporters. Messi is expected to continue his club career with Inter Miami, where his contract runs through 2028.
