New Delhi | October 7, 2026
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has completed 25 years as the head of a government, marking a political journey that began with his swearing-in as Gujarat Chief Minister on October 7, 2001.
Modi served as Gujarat Chief Minister until 2014 before becoming Prime Minister. He has since completed three successive terms at the Centre, beginning in 2014.
Modi Marks 25-Year Milestone
Modi marked the occasion by visiting Shri Vinayak Mandir in Sarojini Nagar, New Delhi, where he offered prayers and expressed wishes for the welfare and prosperity of people across the country.
The milestone covers his 13 years as Gujarat Chief Minister and more than 12 years as Prime Minister.
Cabinet Passes Resolution
The Union Cabinet on October 6 adopted a resolution congratulating Modi on completing 25 years of continuous leadership as head of government.
The resolution highlighted areas including welfare programmes, infrastructure development, technology, economic reforms, national security and India’s international engagement. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Cabinet gave Modi a standing ovation during the meeting.
From Gujarat to National Leadership
Modi’s political journey in government began during a period of challenges in Gujarat, including the aftermath of the 2001 Kutch earthquake. During his tenure as chief minister, initiatives such as SWAGAT and Jyotigram became prominent parts of the state’s governance and development programmes.
The Union Cabinet resolution said some of these experiences were later adapted into national initiatives, including the PRAGATI platform for monitoring government projects.
Renewed Commitment to Public Service
On the 25-year milestone, Modi reiterated his commitment to public service and the country’s development.
His remarks and the Cabinet resolution placed emphasis on the principle of “Nation First” and continued efforts towards the government’s vision of a Viksit Bharat.
The milestone marks one of the longest continuous periods of executive leadership by a political leader in India’s democratic era, spanning state and national government.
