Texas Carries Out Execution
Texas executed 46-year-old Jamaal Howard by lethal injection on October 7, making him the first person executed in the United States since Tennessee’s failed execution attempt involving Christa Pike.
Howard was pronounced dead at 8:03 p.m. at the state prison in Huntsville after receiving pentobarbital. He was convicted of killing convenience store clerk Vickie Swartout during a 2000 robbery in Silsbee, Texas.
Same Drug Used in Both Cases
The execution drew attention because Texas used pentobarbital, the same drug administered to Pike during her September 30 execution attempt. Pike survived after receiving two doses and was later hospitalized.
CNN reported that the exact number of doses administered to Howard was not immediately known.
Legal Challenges Before Execution
Howard’s attorneys asked courts to stop the execution, raising concerns about the state’s lethal-injection drug supply and arguing that Howard was intellectually disabled. The appeals were rejected by Texas and federal courts, allowing the execution to proceed.
Tennessee Reviews Failed Execution
Pike’s failed execution has triggered renewed scrutiny of lethal-injection procedures. Her lawyers have sought preservation of evidence, including syringes and other materials connected with the procedure. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has ordered a review and suspended executions in the state for the remainder of 2026.
