Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, outlining India’s priorities for regional cooperation, security, connectivity and economic opportunities.
The summit, held on August 31 and September 1, marked the 25th anniversary of the SCO. Leaders from member countries gathered to discuss regional stability, economic cooperation and the organisation’s future direction.
Modi called for translating the SCO’s shared vision into practical outcomes, emphasising India’s three key priorities: Security, Connectivity and Opportunity.
PM Modi Calls for Zero Tolerance on Terrorism
Addressing regional security concerns, Modi urged SCO member states to adopt a unified approach against terrorism and reject double standards.
He called for dismantling the entire ecosystem supporting terrorism, including financing, recruitment, radicalisation and safe havens.
The Prime Minister also stressed that terrorism should never be used as an instrument of state policy and called for stronger cooperation among member countries to address security threats.
India Emphasises Connectivity and Trade
Modi highlighted the importance of reliable and inclusive connectivity networks for regional development.
He called for improving roads, railways, air corridors and logistics systems while simplifying customs procedures and promoting digital documentation to facilitate trade.
The Prime Minister also underlined that connectivity initiatives must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, in line with the SCO Charter.
Dialogue and Diplomacy for Global Peace
Referring to ongoing conflicts and their impact on the global economy, Modi said regional crises can affect energy security, maritime trade and international supply chains.
He reiterated India’s position that conflicts should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy rather than military confrontation.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of peace and stability in Afghanistan and continued humanitarian assistance for its people.
India Promotes Youth and Civilisational Cooperation
Modi said the SCO should focus on creating opportunities for young people, entrepreneurs and farmers.
He highlighted India’s initiatives, including the SCO Start-up Forum, Young Authors’ Conclave and Young Scientists’ Forum.
The Prime Minister also welcomed the first SCO Civilizational Dialogue Forum, which India is set to host, as an opportunity to strengthen cultural exchanges and people-to-people connections among member countries.
SCO Summit Marks 25 Years of Regional Cooperation
The 2026 summit brought together leaders to review the organisation’s progress and discuss its role in regional peace, security and prosperity.
The Bishkek Declaration and several agreements and decisions were adopted, covering areas including climate, nuclear safety, energy conservation and combating drug addiction.
Modi called for the SCO to move beyond its existing vision and deliver tangible benefits to people across the region.
