India’s government is considering amendments to IT Rules 2021 for age-based restrictions on social media access for users under 16, inspired by Australia’s under-16 ban. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced ongoing talks with platforms like Meta, X, and YouTube at the AI Impact Summit to implement calibrated safeguards.

Proposed Measures and Rationale

Unlike a full ban, the approach would limit access to specific harmful content while allowing parental consent for others, per DPDP Act guidelines for minors under 18. Vaishnaw stressed protecting children from deepfakes, addiction, and societal harms, following Economic Survey recommendations. This comes amid global moves, with Denmark blocking under-15s and Spain deliberating similar curbs.

Industry and Global Impact

Platforms must verify ages and comply with Indian laws, potentially affecting Meta and Google’s vast user base in the world’s largest youth market. States like Andhra Pradesh explore local bans, but federal calibrated rules prioritize education and connectivity over disconnection. No minimum age exists currently, but enforcement could reshape teen digital habits.
