Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has issued a bold challenge to US President Donald Trump, daring him to send American naval vessels to escort oil tankers through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz amid escalating Middle East tensions. This provocative statement comes as tanker traffic through the strait has plummeted by around 90%, severely disrupting global energy supplies that rely on the waterway for about one-fifth of the world’s oil.

Background on the Strait Crisis

The Strait of Hormuz, linking the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, has seen shipping grind to a near halt due to ongoing regional conflict, including reports of Iranian strikes on over 10 oil tankers. President Trump responded on Truth Social, announcing that the US Navy would escort tankers “as soon as possible” to ensure the free flow of energy worldwide. IRGC spokesperson Alimohammad Naini welcomed the move sarcastically, stating Iran “strongly welcomes” US forces and is “awaiting their presence,” while referencing past incidents like the 1987 Bridgeton supertanker fire.

IRGC’s Defiant Rhetoric

Naini warned the US to recall vulnerabilities, citing the Bridgeton mining during the Iran-Iraq War and recent tanker attacks, implying readiness to target escorted vessels. The IRGC Navy has separately claimed “complete control” over the strait, declaring it under Iranian dominance as one oil tanker briefly transited under cover by disabling its tracker. This escalation follows US and Israeli strikes on Iran, with Tehran invoking wartime rights to potentially hit ships from the US, Israel, Europe, and allies.

Global Energy and Economic Fallout

Oil prices have spiked dramatically—US crude up 28% to over $86 per barrel and Brent by 22% to $89—threatening international trade as exports stall. While a single tanker reached the UAE, broader traffic remains paused, raising fears of prolonged supply shocks. Analysts note challenges for US Navy escorts given the strait’s narrow chokepoint and high volume of normal traffic.
