Iran has permitted Indian-flagged vessels safe transit through the Strait of Hormuz, classifying India among “friendly” nations like China, Russia, Iraq, and Pakistan. This diplomatic breakthrough eases India’s energy import crunch during the US-Iran conflict.

Diplomatic Success

Following talks between EAM S. Jaishankar and Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi, Ambassador Mohammad Fathali confirmed clearance for 28 stranded Indian ships carrying 700 sailors. Tankers like Pushpak, Parimal, and LPG carriers Pine Gas have crossed successfully.

Selective Access Policy

Iran restricts US, European, and Israeli-linked vessels via tolls ($2M/tanker), inspections, and blockades, while allowing non-hostile traffic post-request. Tehran cites “shared interests” with India, exempting them from full restrictions.

Strategic Relief for India

With 50% oil imports via Hormuz, Operation Urja Suraksha naval escorts now complement permissions. Two LPG tankers reached ports, averting shortages despite global disruptions affecting Philippines and others.
