Single-Digit Parties Suddenly Become Crucial

With Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) falling just short of the majority mark in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, attention has now shifted towards smaller parties that could become kingmakers in the coming days. Trends indicate that TVK is hovering around the 108–110 seat mark, while the majority figure stands at 118.

This has made several single-digit parties politically significant overnight.

PMK Emerges as a Major Possibility

Among the smaller parties, the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) appears to be one of the most strategically placed formations. Current trends show PMK securing around 4–6 seats, making it potentially decisive in government formation.

PMK’s influence in northern Tamil Nadu and among specific caste-based voter blocs gives it negotiating power disproportionate to its seat tally.

Congress and BJP Also in the Equation

The Indian National Congress, despite remaining in single digits in Tamil Nadu, is also being discussed as a possible support partner. Congress leaders are reportedly assessing post-poll scenarios carefully, especially given the changing political dynamics between TVK and the DMK-led bloc.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with a limited but notable presence, may also become relevant depending on how coalition arithmetic evolves. Trends currently indicate BJP holding around three seats.

DMDK and Other Regional Forces Could Become Important

Smaller regional outfits like Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) and independents are also being closely watched. Even one or two seats could become critical in a tightly balanced assembly.

Political observers believe Vijay may prefer support from smaller parties rather than entering a large coalition that could dilute TVK’s independent identity.

A Delicate Balancing Act for Vijay

For Vijay, the challenge is not just about securing numbers but also about preserving the image with which TVK entered politics — that of a fresh alternative to Tamil Nadu’s traditional political structure.

A broad coalition with too many compromises could affect that perception. At the same time, refusing strategic support could complicate government formation.

The Next Few Days Become Critical

With negotiations expected to intensify, Tamil Nadu is entering a politically sensitive phase where even parties with four or five seats may influence the direction of the next government.

What seemed like a straightforward breakthrough for Vijay has now evolved into a complex exercise in coalition-building — one that could define not just the future of TVK, but the next political chapter of Tamil Nadu itself.
