BCCI Announces Major Venue Change

HThe Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially shifted the final of the Indian Premier League 2026 from Bengaluru to Ahmedabad. The title clash, scheduled for May 31, will now take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium instead of Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

According to the BCCI, the decision was taken due to “operational and logistical considerations” linked to local requirements that reportedly fell outside the board’s standard protocols.

Safety Concerns Played Key Role

The move comes less than a year after the tragic stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium during celebrations following Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s maiden IPL title victory. The incident had resulted in the deaths of 11 fans and raised serious concerns regarding crowd management and stadium safety.

Although Bengaluru was later cleared to host IPL matches after implementing upgraded safety measures, authorities reportedly remained cautious about handling an event as large as the IPL final. Ahmedabad Gets Another Major FinalAhmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest cricket stadium with a seating capacity exceeding 130,000, has frequently hosted marquee cricket events in recent years. The venue previously staged the IPL finals in 2022 and 2025, along with the finals of major ICC tournaments. BCCI officials also highlighted Ahmedabad’s infrastructure and logistical advantages as important reasons behind the shift. Reports suggest that an International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting scheduled around the same period further strengthened Ahmedabad’s case for hosting the final. Revised Playoff Schedule ConfirmedUnder the revised IPL playoff schedule, Dharamsala will host Qualifier 1 on May 26, while New Chandigarh will stage the Eliminator and Qualifier 2. Ahmedabad will then host the grand finale on May 31. The decision has disappointed the Karnataka State Cricket Association, which stated that Bengaluru was fully prepared to host the event. However, the association acknowledged the BCCI’s authority in determining tournament venues.
