IMD warns of intense heat conditions in multiple states with mercury touching nearly 48°C in some regions
Several parts of India continue to reel under severe heatwave conditions as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued fresh warnings for major cities, including Delhi and Mumbai. Rising temperatures across northern, western, and central states have triggered health concerns, disrupted daily life, and increased pressure on public services.
According to IMD forecasts, temperatures in several regions have crossed seasonal averages, with parts of Rajasthan recording a scorching 47.6 degrees Celsius. Authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours and remain hydrated amid the extreme weather conditions.
Delhi and Mumbai Under Heatwave Watch
The national capital witnessed intense heat throughout the week, with maximum temperatures remaining significantly above normal levels. Hot and dry winds sweeping across north India have further worsened conditions in Delhi and surrounding regions.
Mumbai, which is typically moderated by coastal weather patterns, also experienced unusually high temperatures and humidity levels. Meteorologists warned that heat stress could rise sharply in urban areas due to prolonged exposure to warm nights and rising daytime temperatures.
Multiple States Face Extreme Conditions
Apart from Delhi and Mumbai, severe heatwave alerts have been issued for Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh. Several cities recorded temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius, raising concerns over public health and water shortages.
The IMD stated that dry weather conditions combined with delayed pre-monsoon activity have contributed to the prolonged heat spell. Experts believe the absence of significant rainfall in many regions has intensified surface heating across the country.
Health Advisory Issued by Authorities
Health officials have urged citizens, especially children, senior citizens, and people with existing medical conditions, to take precautions against heat-related illnesses. Hospitals in several cities reported an increase in cases of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and fatigue.
Authorities recommended wearing light clothing, avoiding direct sunlight, and consuming adequate fluids throughout the day. State governments have also instructed local administrations to ensure water availability and emergency medical support in vulnerable areas.
With weather agencies predicting continued high temperatures over the coming days, citizens across affected states are preparing for one of the harshest heat spells of the season.
