The Kerala government is expected to take a decision within the next two weeks on a high-speed rail proposal submitted by renowned engineer E. Sreedharan, a project that could significantly transform the state’s transportation infrastructure and reduce travel time between major cities.
The proposal, prepared by Sreedharan and his team, envisages a modern high-speed rail corridor connecting key urban centres across Kerala. The project aims to address increasing traffic congestion on roads and existing railway lines while providing a faster, safer, and more efficient mode of transportation for passengers travelling through the state.
According to reports, the proposal has already been submitted to the Kerala government for consideration. State authorities are currently examining the technical, financial, and environmental aspects of the project before making a final decision. The government is expected to communicate its position after completing the review process.
Sreedharan, popularly known as the “Metro Man of India” for his role in the successful execution of projects such as Delhi Metro and Kochi Metro, has long advocated the need for a dedicated high-speed rail system in Kerala. He has repeatedly argued that the state’s narrow geography, dense population, and growing transportation demands make a strong case for advanced rail connectivity.
The proposed corridor is expected to run along Kerala’s north-south axis, linking major cities and reducing travel time substantially. Supporters of the project believe it could boost economic activity, improve mobility, attract investments, and strengthen tourism by making intercity travel significantly faster.
The proposal comes amid ongoing discussions about improving Kerala’s rail infrastructure. Earlier, the state government had promoted the SilverLine semi-high-speed rail project, but the initiative faced opposition over land acquisition concerns, environmental issues, and project costs. The new proposal by Sreedharan is being viewed as an alternative approach that may address some of the concerns raised during the SilverLine debate.
Officials indicated that the government will carefully evaluate the project’s feasibility, funding requirements, implementation model, and potential social impact before arriving at a decision. Public consultations and discussions with railway authorities may also form part of the assessment process.
Transportation experts note that Kerala’s growing urbanisation and increasing travel demand require long-term infrastructure solutions. They argue that high-speed rail connectivity could play a major role in improving mobility while reducing dependence on road transport and easing congestion across the state.
