Chennai: Former Tamil Nadu BJP president and ex-IPS officer K. Annamalai has formally parted ways with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and launched a new political movement called “We The Leaders”, marking a significant development in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape ahead of future electoral contests.
Announcing his new political journey, Annamalai said the movement aims to challenge what he described as the culture of personality-driven and dynastic politics that has long dominated the state. The initiative seeks to promote leadership rooted in public service, accountability, and citizen participation.
In a notable departure from conventional political structures, the official platform of “We The Leaders” does not identify Annamalai as its founder, president, or chairman. Instead, he is described as the movement’s “Chief Servant”, reflecting his emphasis on servant leadership and grassroots engagement. The title aligns with his long-standing message that political leaders should function as public servants rather than power centers.
The launch comes days after speculation intensified regarding Annamalai’s future within the BJP. Reports suggested differences over political strategy and alliance decisions in Tamil Nadu, eventually culminating in his resignation from the party.
Annamalai, who emerged as one of the BJP’s most recognizable faces in Tamil Nadu, indicated that the movement would focus on nurturing a new generation of leaders and creating a volunteer-driven network across the state. Political observers believe the initiative could evolve into a larger political force in the coming years.
The former IPS officer has also signaled his intention to remain active in electoral politics and contest future Assembly elections. His departure from the BJP and the launch of “We The Leaders” are expected to reshape political equations in Tamil Nadu, where regional parties have traditionally dominated the electoral landscape.
With the slogan of people-centric leadership and a governance model centered on service rather than hierarchy, “We The Leaders” could emerge as one of the most closely watched political experiments in Tamil Nadu in the years ahead.
