Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has found himself at the center of a major political controversy after remarks linking the state’s anti-encroachment agency HYDRAA to Adolf Hitler sparked sharp reactions from opposition parties, particularly the BJP. The comments, made during a public discussion in Bengaluru, have ignited a fresh political battle in Telangana.
During the event, Revanth Reddy reportedly stated that the term “Hydra” was associated with Hitler’s core team and claimed that the inspiration behind the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) came from that concept. He defended HYDRAA’s aggressive anti-encroachment operations, saying the agency was created to protect lakes, government lands and public assets from illegal occupation.
The statement immediately drew criticism from the BJP, which accused the Congress leader of glorifying authoritarian ideas. BJP leaders alleged that the remark exposed what they described as an “Emergency mindset” within the Congress party and questioned why a democratically elected Chief Minister would invoke the name of a dictator while explaining a government initiative.
The BJP further claimed that the comments reflected a disturbing political approach and argued that public institutions should be inspired by constitutional values rather than controversial historical figures. Party spokespersons demanded an explanation from the Congress leadership and called the remarks inappropriate for someone holding a constitutional office.
The controversy gained momentum on social media, where clips of the Chief Minister’s speech circulated widely. Political opponents questioned the historical basis of the claim, noting that there is no widely accepted historical evidence linking Hitler to the term “Hydra” in the manner described by Revanth Reddy.
Apart from the Hitler reference, the Chief Minister’s defense of HYDRAA’s demolition drives also generated discussion. He highlighted the scale of anti-encroachment actions undertaken by the agency and argued that strict enforcement was necessary to protect Hyderabad’s lakes and public lands from illegal occupation.
HYDRAA has emerged as one of the Telangana government’s most visible initiatives, carrying out demolitions of structures alleged to have been built on water bodies and government property. While supporters view the agency as a necessary mechanism to restore public assets, critics have accused it of excessive actions and inadequate rehabilitation measures.
Political observers believe the controversy could intensify the ongoing rivalry between the Congress government in Telangana and the BJP, which has been attempting to expand its presence in the state. With local body elections and future political contests on the horizon, such controversies are likely to become major talking points in political campaigns.
As the row continues, opposition parties are demanding further clarification from the Chief Minister, while Congress leaders have sought to defend the broader objective behind HYDRAA’s operations. The debate has now shifted beyond urban development and encroachment removal to questions surrounding political messaging, leadership and governance.
For now, Revanth Reddy’s remarks have ensured that HYDRAA remains firmly in the spotlight, not only for its demolition drives but also for the political controversy surrounding its origin story and the reactions it has generated across the political spectrum.
