Noida, Uttar Pradesh: A major milestone in India’s aviation sector was achieved on Monday as Noida International Airport (Jewar Airport) officially commenced commercial operations. The airport welcomed its first scheduled commercial flight, IndiGo flight 6E-2278, which arrived from Lucknow, marking the beginning of passenger services at the long-awaited greenfield airport.
The inaugural IndiGo flight departed from Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknow and landed at Noida International Airport at approximately 7:55 a.m. The arrival marked the operational launch of what is expected to become one of North India’s most important aviation hubs.
A New Chapter for Uttar Pradesh Aviation
The airport, located in Jewar in Gautam Buddha Nagar district, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 28, 2026. Commercial services began nearly three months later after operational clearances and final preparations were completed.
Officials believe the airport will significantly improve connectivity across Uttar Pradesh and the National Capital Region (NCR) while easing congestion at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.
IndiGo Becomes Launch Carrier
IndiGo became the first airline to operate commercial services from the new airport. The inaugural schedule featured the Lucknow–Noida sector, followed by onward operations connecting Noida with Bengaluru. The return flight from Noida to Lucknow was scheduled for the evening.
The airline has announced plans to gradually expand operations from Noida International Airport and connect it with more than 16 destinations across India, including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Srinagar, Amritsar and Navi Mumbai.
More Airlines Set to Join
The airport’s expansion is expected to continue quickly. Reports indicate that Akasa Air will begin services from the airport starting June 16, operating routes to Bengaluru and Navi Mumbai. Additional domestic and international services are expected to follow in subsequent phases.
Meanwhile, the airport’s first cargo flight is scheduled to operate later this week, strengthening its role as a logistics and trade hub for northern India.
Why the Airport Matters
Built as a major aviation infrastructure project, Noida International Airport (DXN) is designed to complement Delhi’s existing airport system. In its first phase, the airport has the capacity to handle around 12 million passengers annually, with future expansion plans expected to make it one of India’s largest airports.
Industry experts believe the airport will boost investment, tourism, logistics and employment opportunities across western Uttar Pradesh while improving air connectivity for millions of travelers.
The successful landing of IndiGo flight 6E-2278 therefore represents more than just the launch of a new route—it marks the beginning of operations at a strategic infrastructure project expected to transform air travel and economic development across the region.
