Bratislava: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Slovakia on Monday for a landmark state visit, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the country since Slovakia gained independence in 1993. The visit is aimed at deepening political, economic and strategic ties between India and the Central European nation.
During his two-day stay in Bratislava, Modi is scheduled to hold separate bilateral meetings with Slovak President Peter Pellegrini and Prime Minister Robert Fico. Discussions are expected to focus on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, technology, manufacturing, innovation and infrastructure development.
The visit comes as part of Modi’s broader European tour, which includes engagements in France and participation in the G7 Summit. India views Slovakia as an important partner in Central Europe and hopes to strengthen economic and diplomatic engagement with the region.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the Slovak leg of the visit is particularly significant because it marks the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to independent Slovakia. The trip is expected to provide fresh momentum to bilateral relations and open new avenues for cooperation.
Focus on Trade and Investment
A major component of the visit is expected to be economic cooperation. Modi will interact with leading Slovak business executives to explore opportunities in sectors such as:
- Automobile manufacturing
- Advanced engineering
- Railway infrastructure
- Technology and innovation
- Clean energy
- Investment partnerships
Both countries are seeking to increase bilateral trade and encourage greater business-to-business collaboration.
Strengthening Strategic Relations
Officials indicate that discussions will also cover global and regional developments, including economic resilience, supply-chain diversification and cooperation in emerging technologies. India has been expanding its engagement with European partners as part of its broader diplomatic outreach strategy.
Before arriving in Slovakia, Modi held meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron in Nice and participated in events highlighting innovation and technology cooperation between India and France.
Historic Significance
Slovak President Pellegrini had earlier described the visit as a historic opportunity to deepen bilateral cooperation and create new partnerships between the two countries. Slovak leaders have expressed interest in expanding collaboration with India across multiple sectors, particularly manufacturing, trade and infrastructure.
The visit is expected to conclude with high-level talks, business engagements and announcements aimed at strengthening India-Slovakia relations for the coming years.
