Russia launched one of its largest aerial assaults on Ukraine in recent weeks, targeting Kyiv and several other cities with a barrage of missiles and drones. The attacks killed at least nine people across the country, injured several others, and caused extensive damage to civilian infrastructure, underscoring the continuing intensity of the more than four-year-long conflict.
Kyiv Under Heavy Attack
Ukrainian authorities said Russia fired dozens of missiles and hundreds of drones overnight, triggering air raid alerts across multiple regions. Kyiv was among the hardest-hit areas, with explosions reported throughout the capital as air defense systems worked to intercept incoming projectiles. Despite successful interceptions, debris and direct strikes caused fires in residential neighborhoods and damaged key infrastructure. Around 140,000 residents temporarily lost electricity following the attack.
Historic Monastery Suffers Major Damage
One of the most significant incidents during the assault was damage to the historic Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Ukraine’s most important religious landmarks. A fire broke out at the Dormition Cathedral within the complex, with images showing flames and heavy damage to parts of the centuries-old structure. Ukrainian officials condemned the attack, calling it an assault on both the nation’s cultural heritage and its people.
Casualties Across Multiple Regions
The attacks extended beyond Kyiv. In Kharkiv, five emergency responders were killed while carrying out rescue operations after a second wave of strikes hit the area. Additional casualties were reported in other regions as missiles and drones targeted infrastructure and populated areas. Ukrainian officials said the nationwide death toll had risen to at least nine.
Russia Rejects Allegations
Russia denied responsibility for the damage to the monastery, claiming that the fire was caused by a malfunctioning Ukrainian air defense missile rather than a direct Russian strike. Moscow maintained that its military operations were aimed at military targets and not civilian or cultural sites.
War Shows No Signs of Slowing
The latest assault comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to find a path toward peace. However, the scale of the attacks highlights the continued volatility of the conflict and the challenges facing international efforts to secure a lasting ceasefire. Ukrainian leaders have renewed calls for stronger air-defense support and greater international pressure on Russia following the latest escalation.
