With International Yoga Day just days away, Uttar Pradesh on Monday launched a week-long yoga campaign at Namo Ghat in Varanasi, bringing together public representatives, yoga enthusiasts, and local residents to promote health and wellness through the ancient Indian practice. The initiative marks the beginning of Yoga Week celebrations leading up to International Yoga Day on June 21.
Grand Launch at Namo Ghat
The Yoga Week celebrations commenced early in the morning at Namo Ghat, one of Varanasi’s prominent riverfront destinations. The event featured yoga demonstrations, awareness programmes, and community participation aimed at encouraging people to adopt healthier lifestyles through regular yoga practice. Several Uttar Pradesh ministers and public representatives took part in the inaugural session.
Countdown to International Yoga Day
The week-long programme is part of the nationwide countdown to the 12th International Yoga Day, which will be observed on June 21. Across the country, governments, institutions, and wellness organisations are conducting awareness campaigns and public events to highlight the physical, mental, and emotional benefits of yoga.
Promoting Health and Wellness
Speakers at the event emphasized yoga’s role in maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Participants were encouraged to integrate yoga into their daily routines to improve physical fitness, reduce stress, and enhance overall well-being. Awareness activities were also organised to educate the public about the long-term health benefits associated with regular yoga practice.
Part of Broader Public Outreach Effort
The programme is also being observed as part of a wider public outreach campaign marking twelve years of the Narendra Modi-led Central Government. Organisers said the initiative seeks to strengthen public engagement while promoting India’s traditional wellness practices on a global stage.
Yoga’s Growing Global Influence
Since the United Nations adopted June 21 as International Yoga Day following India’s proposal, yoga has gained worldwide recognition as a holistic approach to health and well-being. The celebrations in Varanasi reflect the continued efforts to expand awareness of yoga and encourage greater participation across communities.
As International Yoga Day approaches, similar programmes are expected to be held across Uttar Pradesh and other states, reinforcing the message of healthy living and collective well-being through yoga.
