Cairo: Excitement surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI) continues to soar worldwide despite disappointment among many fans over Rockstar Games’ decision to release the game without a physical disc. Pre-orders for the highly anticipated title opened on June 25, and industry analysts expect it to become one of the best-selling entertainment products ever created.
The biggest point of contention among gamers is that even boxed retail editions will contain only a digital download code instead of a playable game disc. Many collectors and long-time fans argue that physical discs offer true ownership, allow resale and sharing, and are important for game preservation.
Speaking to AFP in Cairo, gamer Mahmoud Yasser said he was thrilled that pre-orders had finally begun after years of waiting but was disappointed by the absence of a disc. He said that while he preferred a physical copy, he was happy the game was finally arriving after multiple delays. Another gaming store owner described the announcement as a shock, noting that many customers had expected a traditional physical release.
The GTA franchise, which began in 1997, has one of the largest fan bases in gaming history. Players have waited 13 years since the release of Grand Theft Auto V in 2013, with anticipation growing further after several delays pushed GTA VI’s launch to November 19, 2026.
Industry observers say Rockstar’s digital-only approach reflects a broader shift in the gaming industry toward digital distribution. The move eliminates second-hand sales, gives publishers greater control over pricing, and simplifies distribution for increasingly large game files. However, critics argue that it reduces consumer ownership rights and could accelerate the decline of physical game media.
Despite the criticism, analysts expect the controversy to have little impact on sales. GTA VI is widely regarded as a “system seller” capable of driving millions of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S console purchases. With a starting price of $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition, the game is still forecast to generate record-breaking revenue after launch.
As the countdown to release continues, the debate over digital ownership versus physical media is expected to remain one of the defining conversations in the gaming industry. Even so, enthusiasm for GTA VI shows little sign of slowing, reinforcing its status as one of the most anticipated video game launches of the decade.
