Ayodhya: Veteran Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Champat Rai, one of the most prominent faces of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement and General Secretary of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, has come under intense public scrutiny following the alleged donation embezzlement case linked to the Ayodhya Ram Temple. Although no criminal allegations have been made against him, his position at the helm of the temple trust has placed him at the centre of the controversy.
Champat Rai, 79, hails from Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh. A postgraduate in Physics, he initially worked as a chemistry lecturer before becoming a full-time Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) pracharak. He later joined the VHP in 1980 and played a significant organisational role in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement for decades. His long association with the campaign eventually led to his appointment as General Secretary of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust in 2020, following the Supreme Court’s Ayodhya verdict.
Over the years, Rai emerged as the principal spokesperson for the Ram Temple project, regularly briefing the media on construction progress, fundraising, temple administration and religious ceremonies. His deep institutional knowledge earned him the reputation of being one of the key architects of the temple’s development after the legal dispute was settled.
The current controversy began after police arrested eight individuals in connection with the alleged embezzlement of devotees’ donations. Investigators alleged that money collected from temple donation boxes was siphoned off over a period of time. Among those arrested was a former aide and driver associated with Champat Rai, although investigators have not accused Rai of involvement in the alleged theft.
Following the arrests, reports emerged that Champat Rai and trustee Anil Mishra had stepped down from their positions on moral grounds, accepting responsibility for the administrative lapse while maintaining that they had no role in the alleged financial irregularities. However, the VHP later stated that it had no official information confirming the resignations, leading to uncertainty over their status within the trust.
The alleged donation scandal has sparked political debate, with opposition parties demanding greater transparency in the functioning of the temple trust. At the same time, several Hindu religious leaders and temple litigants have urged that the investigation be allowed to proceed impartially and that strict action be taken against anyone found guilty, irrespective of their position.
As the Special Investigation Team (SIT) continues its probe into the alleged misappropriation of temple donations, the spotlight remains on the trust’s administrative processes and leadership. While Champat Rai’s decades-long contribution to the Ram Janmabhoomi movement is widely acknowledged, the ongoing investigation is expected to shape the future governance of one of India’s most significant religious institutions.
