Afghanistan batter Hashmatullah Shahidi has stepped down as the captain of the national One-Day International (ODI) team with immediate effect, bringing an end to a leadership stint that began in January 2022. Shahidi announced that the decision was personal and expressed gratitude to the Afghanistan Cricket Board, his teammates, coaching staff, and supporters for their trust during his tenure.
The left-handed batter led Afghanistan in 55 ODIs, guiding the side through one of the most successful phases in its 50-over history. Under his captaincy, Afghanistan registered memorable victories over established cricketing nations, including England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, particularly during the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, where the team earned widespread praise for its performances.
