A viral social media video allegedly showing leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) celebrating at a five-star hotel in New Delhi has ignited a fresh political controversy just days after former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned following the nationwide student protest movement. The footage, widely circulated on social media, has prompted sharp reactions from political leaders and renewed scrutiny of the protest campaign.
The alleged celebration reportedly took place shortly after CJP announced the end of its 37-day protest at Jantar Mantar, claiming victory following the resignation of the Education Minister.
Questions Raised Over Funding
The controversy intensified after BJP Rajya Sabha MP and senior Supreme Court advocate Mahesh Jethmalani shared the viral video on social media and questioned who financed the alleged celebration as well as the broader protest campaign.
In his remarks, Jethmalani asked who funded the protesters’ travel, accommodation, food, equipment, logistics, and the alleged hotel celebration, arguing that these questions deserved public scrutiny. His comments quickly gained traction online and sparked a wider political debate.
Background: The 37-Day Protest
The protest movement began over the alleged NEET paper leak and other examination-related issues, with demonstrators demanding accountability and reforms in the country’s examination system.
The agitation lasted more than a month at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, culminating in large demonstrations that, according to reports, led to clashes between protesters and police on July 20. Authorities stated that force was used after prohibitory orders were allegedly violated, while protesters criticised the police response.
Following Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation, CJP announced the withdrawal of its protest after discussions with Union ministers and claimed that several of its key demands had been accepted.
Video Fuels Political Debate
The viral footage has become the latest flashpoint in the ongoing political discourse surrounding the protest movement.
Critics have argued that celebrating at a luxury hotel immediately after weeks of public demonstrations sends the wrong message, especially given the emotional nature of the student-led agitation. Supporters of the movement, however, have questioned the political motives behind the criticism and maintained that the broader issues raised during the protests remain important.
No Independent Verification of Funding Claims
As of now, there has been no official confirmation or publicly available evidence establishing who funded the alleged hotel event or the broader protest activities. The viral video has generated allegations and political accusations, but these claims have not been independently verified by authorities. No official investigative findings regarding the funding have been released at the time of writing.
Political Tensions Continue
The controversy comes at a time when Parliament is debating significant reforms to India’s public examination system, including tougher anti-paper leak legislation and structural changes to the National Testing Agency (NTA).
With the examination controversy continuing to dominate national politics, the viral video has added another dimension to the debate, shifting attention from policy reforms to questions surrounding the conduct and financing of protest movements.
Whether the latest allegations lead to further official inquiries or remain part of the political exchange between rival groups is likely to become clearer in the coming days.
