PM Modi’s Powerful Address on Women’s Reservation Bill Echoes Resolve and Disappointment
In a deeply emotional and resolute address to the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke at length on the failure of the Women’s Reservation Bill, describing it as not merely a legislative setback, but a missed historic opportunity for India’s Nari Shakti.
The Prime Minister began by acknowledging the collective disappointment felt across the country, particularly among women who had been closely following the proceedings.
“We could not succeed this time,” he said, “because the opportunity to empower women was defeated in the House.”
“For Us, India Is Supreme”
Drawing a sharp contrast in intent, the Prime Minister asserted that for his government, the nation always comes first, while accusing sections of the opposition of placing party and political interests above national progress.
“This was not about power. This was about participation. It was about giving women their rightful space in shaping India’s future,” he emphasised.
He reiterated that the bill was designed to bring new voices, new leadership, and new energy into India’s democratic framework, ensuring that women are not just participants, but decision-makers.
A Blow to Aspirations
Reflecting on the moment the bill failed to pass, the Prime Minister described it as deeply hurtful, stating that millions of women across the country were watching with hope and expectation.
“What happened was not just a rejection of a bill,” he noted. “It was a wound to the self-respect of women.”
He added that while women may move forward from setbacks, they do not forget moments that affect their dignity and rightful place in society.
A Question of Intent
The Prime Minister questioned the motives behind opposing the bill, stating that it was never about taking anything away, but about giving women opportunities, representation, and respect.
He also pointed out that if there was a desire to claim credit for such reforms, it should not come at the cost of blocking them in practice.
“This was a pure attempt to bring everyone together and fulfil a long-pending right,” he said.
A Pattern of Resistance
In a broader political observation, the Prime Minister suggested that resistance to reform has often followed a familiar pattern, where major structural changes face opposition driven by political calculations.
He cited past reforms that had initially faced resistance, asserting that progress often requires perseverance in the face of opposition.
The Road Ahead: Determination Over Defeat
Despite the setback, the Prime Minister struck a tone of confidence and determination.
“Yesterday, we did not have the numbers,” he said, “but that does not mean we have lost.”
He emphasised that the support of the nation’s women remains unwavering, and that the government draws strength from that belief.
“Our resolve is strong. Our determination is stronger. And we will continue to move forward until this vision becomes reality.”
A Promise to Nari Shakti
Concluding his address, the Prime Minister assured that the effort to bring women into the mainstream of India’s governance and leadership will not stop.
“This is not the end of the journey,” he said. “It is a moment in a larger fight.”
“We will not stop. We will not fall. We will continue to fight — for the women of this nation, and for India.”
