New Delhi: In a major relief for Aadhaar holders, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced that updating an email address linked to Aadhaar through the official Aadhaar mobile application will be free of cost for six months starting July 1, 2026. The move waives the existing fee of ₹75 charged for email updates through the app.
The initiative is aimed at encouraging more users to link and update their email addresses in Aadhaar records, improving digital communication and strengthening access to online government and financial services. The fee waiver will be available exclusively through the official Aadhaar mobile application and not through other update channels.
According to UIDAI, a registered email address can help users receive important notifications related to Aadhaar services, authentication requests and account activities. Keeping contact information updated also enhances security and makes it easier to access various digital services linked to Aadhaar.
To avail the free service, users will need to download or update the official Aadhaar mobile app, complete onboarding and verification requirements, and follow the in-app process for updating their email address. UIDAI has indicated that identity verification measures will continue to be applied to ensure the authenticity of update requests.
The announcement comes alongside UIDAI’s broader efforts to promote digital self-service facilities. The authority has also extended the free online Aadhaar document update facility through the myAadhaar portal until June 14, 2027, allowing users to update identity and address proof documents without paying any fee.
Officials believe the temporary waiver will encourage millions of Aadhaar holders to update their records and improve the accuracy of the Aadhaar database. With increasing reliance on digital identity verification across government and private sector services, maintaining current contact details has become increasingly important.
The free email update facility will remain available for six months from July 1, after which the standard service charges may be reinstated unless UIDAI announces a further extension.
