Kabul/Islamabad: Tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan have escalated after the Afghan Taliban launched military strikes along the border, marking a significant increase in hostilities between the neighbouring countries. The attacks come amid growing disputes over border security, cross-border militant activity and territorial claims.
According to reports, Afghan forces targeted Pakistani military positions near the disputed frontier following a series of clashes in recent days. Pakistani authorities responded with retaliatory fire, while both sides accused each other of provoking the confrontation. There were reports of casualties, although officials have not released a confirmed toll.
The border between the two countries, particularly along the Durand Line, has long been a source of friction. Pakistan has repeatedly accused the Taliban government of failing to curb militant groups operating from Afghan territory, while the Taliban has rejected the accusations and opposed sections of the border fence erected by Pakistan.
Security analysts warn that the latest exchange of fire represents one of the most serious military confrontations since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021. The renewed violence has raised concerns about regional stability and the possibility of further escalation if diplomatic efforts fail.
Authorities on both sides have increased security deployments in the affected border areas, and residents have reportedly fled villages close to the conflict zone as fears of additional clashes grow. Humanitarian agencies are also monitoring the situation for any displacement of civilians.
The international community has urged both governments to exercise restraint and resolve their differences through dialogue. Observers say continued instability along the Afghanistan–Pakistan border could have wider implications for regional security, trade and counterterrorism cooperation.
